PREVENTATIVE

What is Preventative Dentistry?

Cleanings

One of the most important ways to maintain good oral health is to have a professional dental prophylaxis (or cleaning) at least twice a year by one of our Registered Dental Hygienists.

A cleaning typically consists of:

  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, clear film that sits on the teeth and consists of bacteria, debris, and salvia.  Plaque builds on the teeth and gums and causes inflammation and tooth decay.

  • Removal of Calculus (tartar):  Calculus is a hardened plaque that is firmly attached to the teeth.  Calculus attaches to the teeth above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.

  • Tooth Polishing: Polishing removes stains and plaque that cannot be removed with regular brushing.

Radiographs

Radiographs or dental x-rays are a necessary diagnostic tool. They provide valuable information that would not otherwise be detectable on a clinical exam.

Radiographs allow the dentist to see the following:

  • Tooth decay between teeth

  • Margins of existing restorations

  • Bone health/Periodontal problems

  • Root length

  • Nerve position in the jaw

  • Sinus position

  • TMJ health

  • Cysts or tumors

  • Tooth development/developmental problems

  • Root Canal health

  • Impacted wisdom teeth

  • Implant health

Exams

A comprehensive exam will be performed by one of our dentists at your initial visit.

At regular dental visits our dentists and hygienist with check the following:

  • Radiographs (x-rays) evaluation

  • Oral Cancer screening

  • Evaluation of existing restorations

  • Evaluation of new tooth decay

  • Evaluation of the gums and bone health

  • TMJ evaluation

This exam allows our dentist to come up with a diagnosis that would allow for a treatment plan to be made.

Sealants

Sealants are preventative procedures performed on the biting surface of teeth to prevent future tooth decay.  The biting surfaces of our teeth are made up of several grooves that are often difficult for the bristles of a toothbrush to reach.  This allows bacteria to build up in the grooves and cause stains and decay.  A tooth colored material is placed into the grooves to “seal” the biting surface and allows the toothbrush to remove more bacteria as we brush.
